A Harvest Homecoming

Homecoming week has come and gone. This year, ASB welcomed fall by holding a pumpkin carving contest on Monday, October 25th. The idea was to see who could carve the best looking pumpkin in a short amount of time. The Residence Hall took best pumpkin home.

The perfect time for scarecrows to be made is when the leaves begin to fall. To continue the fun of Homecoming Week, candidates decorated scarecrows on Tuesday. Judging was divided into three separate catego- ries. Forestry Club won scariest scarecrow, while ASB decorated the happiest scarecrow by adding a smile and a bow. Most original scarecrow went to Alpha Gamma Sigma.

Wednesday was dedicated to all the clubs by having lunch in the Veteran`s Park located next to the Student Ser- vices building. Kourtney, a member of ASB said, "The club social was for every club on campus to get together and have a fun time and socialize." Members of different clubs sat together and enjoyed their lunch under the trees. On Thursday, the quad was turned into a series of events. They had candidates racing in wheelbarrows, racing with only three legs, and pulling at each other in a game of tug O war, all in the spirit of homecoming.

Friday was used to hold a reverse beauty contest in the cafeteria. This beauty contest came with a twist since males had to dress like females, and females at males, which had them looking like the opposite sex. The fun of judging the beauty contest went to three lucky members of the audience.

It was a good way to welcome fall into Reedley College. Before you know it, all the leaves will have fallen off the branches off the trees, and winter will have arrived.

The Reed- ley College Green Club has been working on orga- nizing and recruit- ing participants for the 3rd annual Green Summit, which will be held on April 21, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. un- til 2:00 p.m. in the Reedley College quad. The event will be held the day before Earth Day, the global celebra- tion to promote appreciation and awareness for the Earth’s environment.

According to Bethany Smith Bush, Green Club Advisor and RC Biology instructor, "The Green Summit is an event designed to raise community awareness regarding various green issues and technologies." Like previous years' summits, there will be exhibits on solar power technology, agricultural technologies, the latest in green vehicles, and many other interesting new green products and technolo- gies entering the market. “Student involvement will make this year’s summit the most successful event yet,” said Bush.

The event will be open to all com- munity members who are interested in moving towards a lifestyle of sustainability. "We encourage anyone who has an interest green technology, sustainable living, or environmental preservation to become involved in this year’s Green Summit,” said Bush.

Clubs Rush for Involvement

This semester’s Club Rush was held on September 8 in the Quad with more than a dozen clubs participating in the event.
During Club Rush, the various clubs at Reedley College set up booths to provide information to people  interested in joining.
Research has shown that being involved in a club can help improve academic performance and teach skills that can be applied in other areas.
College Center Assistant Adelfa Lorenzano has witnessed firsthand how clubs benefit students. She has seen students who join clubs become more involved on campus and develop relationships with the faculty.
Reedley College Club Rush is held at the beginning of every semester.
